Mumbai, Sep 12 (IANS) Satyagiri Shipping Co has received a mandate from the Maharashtra government to build terminals and operate a shipping service between Nariman Point and Borivali in Mumbai that will ease the metropolis' traffic woes. 'The government has recently granted a letter of award to Satyagiri Shipping, permitting it to set up necessary shipping infrastructures and operate passenger shipping services between Nariman Point in South Mumbai and Borivali in North Mumbai,' the company's chairman Nitin Joshi said at a meet organised here by the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC). 'My company is determined to go ahead with the project and will start constructing the terminals before January 2007, complete them within next two years, and provide Mumbai with a world-class water transport system,' said Joshi, according to an IMC statement issued Tuesday. The ferry service is expected to ease the pressure on Mumbai's congested north-south suburban railway services and provide an alternative to the creeping public road transport system. 'Our sea-based Nariman Point-Borivali transport will be a boon to the city, as it will provide a speedier, non-polluting and more comfortable alternative to the commuters,' Joshi said. Satyagiri Shipping was pitted against Four Seasons, a consortium of US-based non-resident Indians, for the Rs.5 billion inland waterways project of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
